Urban chickens. Looking for healthy alternatives/additions to laying pellets in feed stores?

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

I’m not too sure about the laying pellets I buy for my much-loved backyard chickens, and I’m trying to cut costs too. I feed mine table scraps, tomatoes, plain spaghetti, oatmeal, collard greens, raisins and grapes, green peppers, strawberries, breads—-whatever I have or can get on sale. Plus worms and crickets and such when I let them roam. BUT I don’t always have this stuff on hand so I’m really looking for a good basic feed or one I can mix myself. I don’t completely trust the chicken feed at my local shop. Any good brands or suggestions on making a feed? Thanks.

Chili in crockpot - peppers?

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009

I am making chili in the crock pot for tonight.

I normally put in 1 green bell pepper and 1 red bell pepper. The store was out of green peppers, so I got 2 red ones. I wanted to ask the cooks out there if they thought 2 red bell peppers would be too sweet for the chili?

Should I substitute the green for the red pepper or just leave it without anything in place of the green pepper?

Thanks!

Raccoons and skunks constantly tear up my garden. Are there any non-chemical solutions that work well?

Saturday, September 19th, 2009

My garden consists of nice shrubs and moss in-between large stones. The critters seems to like to dig up the moss in search of grubs. I’ve tried chemicals to kill the grubs, but they dig us up nonetheless. I have a trap and catch them and have animial control relocated them, but we live somewhat close to the mountains outside of Los Angeles and there is a steady stream of racoons, skunks and possum.

Has anyone had good luck with fox urine? I’ve tried it and can’t say that it worked well. We’ve also tried cayenne pepper applications, which work for a few days until the sprkinlers soak the garden and the pepper is washed away. Plus, the pepper turns the green moss red.

Thoughts?

Do you think people would eat here?

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

If there was a joint that had all the food you find at carnivals do you think people would eat there? Sometimes I just feel like an elephant ear, fresh lemon aide or a nice unhealthy sausage covered in onions and green pepper. Why hasn’t anyone done this? I think people would even just go there for the smell.

what is a terrific & easy salsa recipe?

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Someone from hubby’s work brought in about 2 dozen peppers & he brought them to me… He said to make salsa…

I have about 1 dozen green peppers & 1 dozen jalapeños… I’ll be getting tomatoes from next door neighbor… and I know vinegar is an ingredient.

But what else do I need. The less money I have to spend on this, the better! Oh, yes, I know I have to put onions in it too!

Thanks ahead of time :)

1 Tbsp. Garlic Powder
1 (4 oz.) can Green Chili Peppers
2 tsp. Salt
